LEDs Helping Babies Sleep

Imagine yourself exhausted, sleep-deprived, desperate to rest your drooping eyelids with a crying newborn in the next room. You’ve tried everything from swaddling to feeding to diaper changing to rocking and nothing will calm them. Have you ever thought to try LEDs to help your baby sleep? If not, here’s a few reasons why you should give it a shot!

LEDs and Sleep: Helping Set Your Newborn’s Schedule
LED bulbs have recently entered the hospital market to help maternity wards treat babies born with jaundice. Now a lighting company by the name of The Lighting Science Group is creating LED lights for everyday consumers that can help your baby drift to sleep. Their light, Sleepy Baby, is a dim yellow light used to create a warmly-lit and relaxing environment to help calm tired babies and ease them to sleep.

In an interview with the New York Times, Mariana Figuerio, a light and research leader at the Lighting Research Center of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute said, “Lighting is really not about a fixture in the ceiling anymore. It’s about delivering individualized light treatments to people.”

Exposing yourself or your baby to bright, artificial light after the sun has gone down can repress the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, making you less tired as well as your baby more restless. By using a light that can be dimmed to a softer, warmer tone at night, this will help your baby fall asleep at the appropriate time.

Parents of young children were interviewed in the same article for the New York Times about using dimmed LED lights to help their children sleep. Susan Sheehan put a dimmed LED bulb in her child’s room when her baby was five months old. Now her daughter wakes less often in the night, allowing Susan to catch up on sleep.

Chip Brian, father to a four-year-old son, installed the soft LED light in his son’s room, as he was a very active child when bedtime rolled around. Now his son will fall asleep and stay asleep until morning!
