1. Seal Air Leaks

When the temperatures begin to drop and it’s time to turn on your heat, you want to make sure the precious warm air is staying in your home, not leaking out through your windows and doors. Add weather stripping to your doors and windows, and make sure they are latching and locking tightly to keep warm air in and cold air out.

2. Lower Your Thermostat

Lowering your thermostat is one of the easiest ways to conserve energy this fall. When you and the family are out of the house, turn the thermostat down to save energy. You can also open your blinds to let the sunlight naturally heat your home while you’re away!

3. Maintain Your Heating Systems

The key to a well-functioning heating systems is keeping it well-maintained. If your home uses a furnace, be sure to replace your filter once a month or as needed.

4. Lower Your Water Heating Costs

According to the Department of Energy, water heating accounts for 18 percent of energy used in your home. Reset your water heating temperature to the warm setting, around 120 degrees, to save energy!

5. Switch to LEDs

Daylight hours are waning in the fall and more lights are needed on in your house. Switch to LEDs to keep your home brightly lit while conserving energy and saving money. You can even replace your outdoor lights with LEDs, as they perform well in cold weather and are instant-on!
