Learn the Difference: Incandescents, CFLs and LEDs

Hear from our experts on Everything LED Lighting

There’s no denying it, LEDs are the hottest lighting product on the market today. But why? You may have heard of their great energy savings, low heat output and durability, but how do they stack up against the lights we commonly use? Today we’re going to show you the good, the bad and the ugly of the lighting industry: incandescents, CFLs and LEDs. Now, let’s meet our competitors!

Incandescent Lights

In corner number one, we have incandescent lighting. In today’s lineup, incandescent lights offer the lowest energy efficiency. Coming in at 1,200 hour lifespan for a 60w bulb, the incandescent light’s track record is ugly. In the past, incandescent lights have shown poor performance in cold weather, humid environments and crack under very little pressure.

CFL Lights

In corner number two, we have CFL lighting. CFLs became a fan favorite over incandescents a few years back. Entering the ring with a 8,000 hour lifespan for a 13-18w bulb, CFLs beat out incandescents on all energy efficient fronts. However, CFLs also perform poorly in cold and humid environments, as well as break easily under pressure.

LED Lights

Lastly, in corner three, we have LED lighting. LEDs are the rookie of the lighting industry but they came out swinging! A 6-8w LED bulb can last 50,000 hours. With low wattage and operating costs, LEDs pack a huge energy saving punch! While these lights may have small wattage usage and energy costs, they’ve proven to be the most durable of today’s lineup. LEDs perform very well in cold weather and humid environments and can take a beating. LEDs are ready to work even after being dropped!

And the Winner is…

LED lighting! With incandescent lights on the way out, LEDs have taken over as fan favorite for CFLs. There’s no denying LEDs are the full package with great energy savings and physical durability.
