Celebrate Earth Day with LEDs

Hear from our experts on Everything LED Lighting

Saturday, April 22nd, is Earth Day! It’s a day to celebrate all the wonders of the world, and reflect on what we can do to help better our environment. You’ll often hear the phrase, “Reduce, reuse, recycle,” in tandem with Earth Day celebrations. These three tenants also apply to LED lighting, which is a great way to save yourself some money while going green! Here are a few ways you can use LEDs to reduce, reuse and recycle this Earth Day!

Reduce

Installing LED lighting is a great way to reduce your wattage, the amount of CO2 in the air, number of mercury-filled fluorescent lights on the market, and your energy bill! LEDs use a significantly reduced number of watts to create an even brighter light than your current incandescent and fluorescent lights, giving you more bang for your buck. This reduction in wattage means a reduction in the amount of energy needed to power the lights. As most electricity is powered through coal plants, which releases excess amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, reducing your overall usage of power helps your wallet and the environment.

Reuse

A great way to become more eco-friendly is to find creative ways to reuse worn down household items. Creating a quilt out of old t-shirts instead of throwing them away, creating plant holders out of egg cartons, turning old light bulbs into flower vases, even creating wall art with toilet paper rolls. The list goes on and on! While traditional lighting tends to burn out after only a few years, LED lighting lasts upwards of 50,000 hours or more! Depending on your usage, they can last more than 25 years! This eliminates the need for you to find a way to “reuse” old LED lighting because they work for decades!

Recycle

When making the decision to install LED lighting, it is important to know how to properly dispose of old light fixtures. Incandescent and fluorescent tubes can be recycled, and should be, as fluorescent tubes contain mercury and need to be properly disposed. You can read our blog here on how to properly recycle your fluorescent light bulbs. Not only should you recycle your traditional bulbs but, when the time comes, it is much easier to recycle LED bulbs. LEDs contain no harmful chemicals, and can be recycled much more easily than fluorescent lighting. Although, recycling LEDs won’t be a common chore due to their long lifespan!
