Could Traditional Lighting Be Doing You Harm?

While LED lighting and research surrounding it is still growing and evolving, we do know one major thing: LED lighting is better for humans than traditional incandescent and fluorescent lighting. Even keeping existing lighting could be doing you harm.

Office Traditional Lighting vs. LED Lights

One example of how LEDs may be hurting you is in the office setting. Dim incandescent and fluorescent lighting ranging from 3000K to 3500K could be doing you damage. Most office workers get very little sunlight, as the majority of their time is spent indoors. 5000K LED lighting would help improve office workers’ stamina and focus.

LED Lights vs. Caffeine

While coffee is a great way to jolt awake in the morning and mid-afternoon, it can often leave people feeling jittery or very tired once they come down from their caffeine high. LED lights offer a way to help you stay focused and alert consistently throughout the day without any dips or valleys. Whether you work under constant 5000K lighting or tunable LED lighting to mimic the sun’s progression through the sky, they’ll help you stay awake without a dependence on the coffee pot.

Traditional Lighting in Schools vs. LEDs

Stan Walercyzk from LED Magazine recently conducted a study in an elementary school using LED lighting. He states, “The teacher and students typically have the main troffers on at 6500K all day long. And if the teacher forgets to also turn on the 10,000K troffers in the morning for math, the students remind her and state they can learn better with those lights also on.”

Students, it would seem, prefer to learn under brighter LED lights, as it helps them focus on the task at hand. To learn more about the effects of LED lighting in schools, check out our blog here.

Hospital Traditional Lighting vs. LEDs

It has been reported that more errors occur at the hospital during the third, overnight shift than the first two shifts combined. Some people believe it to be the interior design, when in reality it is working at night with no natural lighting. Currently, a study is being conducted to see how lighting, including blue-LED lighting, effects errors during third shifts at hospitals.
